Bless the Sun

ברכת החמה

And God said: Let there be lights in the vastness
of sky to separate day from night...
And they shall serve as lights in the
vastness of space, to shine upon the earth.
And it was so.

(Genesis 1:14 -15)

Every 28 years, the Jewish community celebrates the return of the sun to its original place in the heavens at the precise time and day of its creation.
This celebration is called Birkat Hahammah - blessing of the sun.

The next date on which we mark this moment is April 8, 2009.
This site is dedicated to helping you mark this amazing day.

We hope you enjoy what you find here, and welcome you to add your own thoughts, prayers, programs and photos.

The image at the upper left is part of a complete zodiac wheel and is the central panel of a synagogue floor in Kibbutz Beit Alpha in Israel near Beit Shean. The chariot in the center represents the Sun.

This website is sponsored by a coalition of Jewish environmental organizations. A listing of Participating Organizations can be found here.
